Geranium Essential Oil Uses and Benefits – Pelargonium graveolens

Geranium essential oil is an amazing gift from the earth. We can trace it’s use back to ancient Egyptian times when they used the oil for beautifying their skin and hair. Not only does this oil smell great, but it has some real world uses that make it an important ingredient in your essential oil arsenal.

Geranium Oil from doTerra can be used internally, topically, and aromatically.

Geranium Oil is may help maintain the skin’s softness and smoothness. You can add a few drops of geranium essential oil to a skin moisturizer or try a steam facial as a great way to open your pores and help your skin feel renewed. The best steam facial includes herbs or essential oils. Create your own steam facial with Geranium essential oil. The properties of Geranium essential oil will help beautify the skin while the steam facial cleanses and clears the skin.

Geranium essential oil is great for both dry and oily hair. Apply a few drops to your shampoo or conditioner bottle, or make your own deep hair conditioner. Try this hair conditioner recipe: Mix 1 cup water, 2 Tbsp. Apple Cider Vinegar, and 10 drops of Geranium Essential Oil in an 8 oz. glass spray bottle or in a BPA-free plastic spray bottle. Shake the bottle vigorously to thoroughly blend all the ingredients together. Spray it onto the hair, allow it to soak in for 5 minutes, then rinse it out.

Geranium gets absorbed and then exits the body through perspiration. Thanks to it’s antibacterial properties, Geranium essential oil aids in eliminating bodily odors and can be used as a natural deodorant.  That means using it topically can help you smell better when you sweat. You can mix a few drops of geranium essential oil to a spray bottle with water and spray it on your skin.

Geranium can be used to help clear blemishes from the skin like acne. Use Geranium on a cotton ball or q-tip swab for a spot treatment.

Geranium is the essential oil of love and trust. Geranium helps to heal a broken heart. It encourages emotional honesty, softens anger, and assists in healing emotional wounds. When there has been a lose of trust, geranium can help to encourage honesty, love and forgiveness.

To use this oil for it’s emotional benefits, simply inhale it from the bottle, place a drop or two on your hands and inhale from cupped hands, or mix with some fractionated coconut oil and place it over your heart. Close your eyes and allow whatever feelings emerge come through. Breathe in the scent and allow those feelings to wash over you. Journal your feelings and remember to be kind to yourself. Chant loving affirmations like:

  • I am loved.
  • I am capable of trusting again.
  • My heart is opening up to new possibilities.
  • This is just a small part of my story.
  • I am healing more and more every day.
  • I am allowing myself to let go.

Don’t get discouraged if you still feel sadness or rage, or if you find yourself wondering how to get over the agony you’re feeling, or even feel hopeless that you ever will. The negative thoughts and negative self-talk won’t magically dissipate, but as you pay attention to your thinking and say these positive affirmations, you can find increased peace and acceptance to soothe your sorrow.

Germanium can also be used as a bug repellent. Because of the chemical components found in Geranium essential oil, it can be useful for naturally repelling insects. Add a drop to a cotton ball and place it in corners where insects are likely to be found. If you are going to garden outside, wear Geranium essential oil to keep the insects away.

By far my favorite way to use geranium essential oil is to help relieve PMS symptoms. Not only does it smell good, but it helps to relieve discomfort. To use add a few drops to fractionated coconut oil and rub over lower abdomen.

Geranium is herbaceous, green, floral, sweet, dry. I love diffusing Geranium essential oil for the sweet floral scent. Here are some amazing blends to try:
