New Moon Magic

This March’s Worm full moon weighed heavy on me. Although magic is all around, I’ve felt it just out of my grasp. The need for change is coming, that’s one thing I feel in my soul. I’m so grateful the new moon is this week. It will be a good time for manifestation change.

Contrary to popular belief, the full moon is not the only time to do spellwork.

On April 11th at 10:32 pm EST the new moon of Aries will be upon us. The Aries new moon is an ideal time to work on what we want for ourselves. So it’s time to think of a new project, look out for yourself, and get ready for new opportunities. If you are hoping to do some spell work, now is the time to start gathering supplies and set those intentions.

For just about every desire, there is a way to work this phase into your spell. For example, if you want to banish debt use the new moon to welcome a new opportunity to make money. You don’t have it yet, but you can use the timing of the new moon to welcome whatever it may be into your life.

New Moons are the perfect time for spells dealing with:

  • Cleansing/Purifying
  • Social Gatherings
  • Self-Confidence
  • Personal Growth
  • New Beginnings

If you’re anything like me, you usually fly by the seat of your pants for Esbats, (and sometimes Sabbats as well). Being an eclectic witch for me means showing up to do almost anything, but not spending a lot of time worrying about the preparation. I’ve come to realize that this isn’t always the best way to really manifest my magic. Some magic, especially if it something with a lot of personal attachments, requires preparation.

How I’m preparing for this new moon:

  • Getting really clear about what it is I want to manifest in my life
  • Journaling out those clear intentions
  • Meditate on the details of what my reality will be when it comes to fruition
  • Being open to nudges on things I should be working on as well as tools/materials that may be required for my new moon spellwork (ingredients to add, colors to work with, oils to anoint with, etc.)

Essential Oils I like to use in New Moon Magic:

  • Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
  • Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens/lusitanica)
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
  • Jasmine (Jasinum grandiflorum)
  • Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
  • Wild Orange (Citrus sinensis)
  • Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis)
  • Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)

The depth of ritual you choose to use, as well as the words are up to you. Choose tools that speak to you, pick a candle color that denotes your desired result.

Simple spell for New Moon Magic:

  1. Write out your intentions, be as specific as possible.
  2. Create a sacred space for your magic. Cast a circle in your mind or in physical space by  diffusing essential oils, anointing your space with oils or burning incense, sage or palo santo. Set the mood for your space with sounds or just quiet. Lay out your tools including crystals, symbols or the four elements, or anything else you see fit.
  3. Ground yourself through meditation, chanting, or something that helps you tap into your power.
  4. Open yourself to the new moon’s energy. Everything that is ending has gone away to make space for the new.
  5. Read or speak aloud your intentions for the new lunar month.
  6. Give thanks and close your sacred space.

Divination on the New Moon

This can be done with tarot or oracle cards, runes, or even a pendulum.

  1. Create a sacred space in your surroundings and/or in your mind. (using ideas in #2 above)
  2. Ground yourself and focus on the questions you would like answers to.
  3. Shuffle the cards or runes (or steady your pendulum) as your focus on your question.
  4. Layout your cards in the spread you feel most called to use.

I should mention that not all witches are called to use moon magic. I am using my cards, and pendulum almost everyday. Not all witches do. Some will definitely wait for the moon phase to use divination. If you don’t feel called to celebrate the new moon at all, or if time doesn’t allow, don’t fret. There are plenty of other things you do, or not do, to use your magic.

Happy Manifesting!
